SOPA, PIPA, ACTA ... people are angry that governments are trying to censor them. They don't want to be censored, and have provided a lot of arguments to argue why censorship is a terrible idea. One argument that pops up a lot goes like this: 'Regardless of how bad it is, copyright enforcement through censorship won't work because geeks will find a way around it'. And it certainly is true that there are a lot of smart people around to invent new ways of circumventing censorship. But this misses the real point. It doesn't matter if you can build a way to circumvent censorship - in the grand scheme of things, it won't matter. The rest of this post explains why this is the case. Een 'surrealistische', 'inventieve' operatie noemt hij het. Ik noem het slaapverwekkende performance art, maar de diepere boodschap van Peeters zij begrepen: collectief scheppen, dat moeten we, om de individualistisch ingestelde, neoliberale economie te hervormen. Peeters vindt dat dit een prachtige allegorie is voor de 'problemen' waar de Occupy Wall Street beweging mee te maken heeft. Vervolgens parafraseert hij de Sloveense filosoof Slavoj Zizek, om zijn standpunt te maken. Zizek's vraag 'what do we want', is voor Peeters defaitistisch: hij heeft het al opgegeven, dit is 'the end of history', er is geen alternatief voor het vrije markt denken, beter krijgen we het niet. Zizek als een new-age Francis Fukuyama, als een Reborn Neocon, het moet niet veel gekker worden. Gelukkig klopt deze interpretatie van Zizek's toespraak van geen kant.
